Voice Community Kitchens — Nourishing Hope, Feeding Hearts

A Beacon of Compassion in Challenging Times

In the face of one of Sri Lanka’s most severe economic crises in recent memory, Voice Community Kitchens — an initiative of the Voice Foundation Sri Lanka — has stepped forward as a bright symbol of hope, compassion, and community resilience. As spiraling food prices, fuel shortages, and rising living costs have placed immense pressure on households nationwide, these community kitchens have been a lifeline for thousands of families who struggle to put food on the table.

Sri Lanka’s economic downturn has pushed millions into food insecurity, with an estimated 5 million people requiring food assistance and many households reporting they must skip meals or reduce their intake just to cope.

More Than Just a Meal

Voice Community Kitchens began with a simple but powerful insight: dry food rations alone weren’t enough for people who lacked cooking fuel. When volunteers encountered families who hadn’t been able to cook for days due to gas shortages, the Foundation realised a new approach was needed — one that served hot, nutritious meals right where people live and work.

Since launch, these kitchens have expanded rapidly, operating across 23 locations nationwide and serving tens of thousands of meals to communities in need.  Each kitchen is strategically placed to serve both urban and rural populations — from Colombo to Batticaloa, Jaffna and beyond — ensuring that no community is left behind.

Powered by Community, Fueled by Kindness

At the heart of this initiative is its community ethos. Local volunteers — from teachers and students to business owners and neighbours — come together daily to prepare and serve meals. Their collective effort is supported by generous donations of food, time, and resources, including fresh produce, cooking supplies, and invaluable manpower.

Rather than simply handing out food, Voice Community Kitchens foster connection. Volunteers and guests break bread together, sharing greetings, stories, and hope. This human connection underscores the Foundation’s belief that feeding a person means nourishing their dignity, too.

A Ripple Effect of Impact

Over the last year, the Voice Community Kitchens have served more than 250,000 meals, providing not just sustenance but also stability, comfort, and reassurance in uncertain times.

Every plate of rice and curry served represents more than nutrition — it represents unity, care, and the belief that no one should go hungry in a country rich in community spirit.

Get Involved — Be the Change
